Artist Bio
So who is Ryan Meeking?“I’m a country boy,” he smiles. “But I never wanted to be.” He grew up in Kyabram (population 6000) in Victoria’s Goulburn Valley. At high school, he discovered the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Jeff Buckley, and formed his first band with his best mate, The Few’s bass player Simon Rabl. They called themselves Noodles Romanoff and The Flustered Peacocks. They made it to Melbourne, did an interview on PBS, and broke up.
Ryan and Simon later formed The Few with drummer Corey Gaal and guitarist Brett Scapin. “I love these guys,” Ryan says, “they all play with feeling, more with their hearts than their heads.” Just check out the gentle Thunder Without The Storm and the dynamic Shouting Underwater. Night Owls follows 2008’s Broken Cars & Empty Pockets EP. The band sold 1500 copies at gigs, and the lead track, Layers, got strong support from Triple J and public radio.
As for the title of the new EP, Ryan confirms, “We are night owls. Most of our friends went to uni and now have ‘serious’ jobs, but we’re in a totally different time-zone. I just function better at 1am than I do at any other time of the day.”
The first single to be taken from the EP “Morning Bird” was written while Ryan was in the UK. “It was a real turning point for me songwriting-wise. Something happened during all the partying and introspection. One day, hungover and sick of partying, I got out of London and went to Eastbourne. I ended up in a beautiful backyard, where I found an owl hooting in 4/4 time! I was jamming along with the owl, thinking, “Why is he up in the middle of the day?” Then I thought, “Why have I been up in the middle of the night?”
